About the Company
A community interest company teaching practical photography from a working farm on the edge of Ennerdale.

Pony Pals Lakeland began the way most good things in Cumbria do β with two people, a farm, and a bit of a leap. In April 2024 we registered a community interest company, and set the barn up not for ponies but for people: a place where anyone in West Cumbria could learn to make photographs properly, without jargon, without judgement and without needing a room full of expensive gear first.
The farm does the teaching with us. The barnyard is our studio yard; the walls, gates and fields are our portrait sets; and Ennerdale’s fells stand in for every landscape lesson on the timetable. Beginners learn exposure ten steps from where the sheep are moulting on the fence, and by the time the kettle has been on twice, the exposure triangle has stopped being scary.
As a CIC, our first duty is to the community the company serves: keeping beginner photography genuinely affordable, keeping groups small, and putting any surplus back into loan equipment, subsidised places for local young people, and free taster sessions at village shows. Nobody gets turned away for asking a basic question here β that is rather the point.
The two of us

Samantha Shepherd
Samantha looks after the teaching programme and the farm’s daytime studio β and the person most likely to be found re-explaining shutter speed with a barn-door analogy until it lands.

Kirstylee Smith
Kirstylee runs bookings, the loan kit and the kettle, and co-teaches the beginner days. If your booking confirmation says Tuesday, that was her doing.
