Composition in the Field
Gear matters far less than where you stand and when you press the button. We spend almost the whole day outside, moving between quiet Lakeland locations and working on one idea at a time until it clicks.
What you’ll learn
- The classic rules of composition — and when to break them
- Working a scene: five shots from one viewpoint
- Leading lines, frames and negative space in real landscapes
- Choosing foregrounds that give images depth
- Tripod craft: slow, deliberate image-making
- Honest group feedback at the end of the day
How the day runs
- Meet & plan the lightCoffee at the barn and a short session on how we will chase the day’s best light.
- First light at the valleyA short drive to a nearby viewpoint — wide scenes, foregrounds and horizon discipline.
- Working a sceneOne location, one hour: every participant builds a five-frame sequence from the same spot.
- Woodland & detailSlower looking — patterns, texture and frames within frames.
- Review & feedbackBack at the barn: a friendly group review of everyone’s strongest frames.
